Kyogen"SHUKUGARAKASA "(The Riddle Umbrella)
main performer:Tojiro Yamamoto
★story★
A Daimyo calls Taro Kaja and asks him what it is that people are always laughing about at various gatherings. Taro Kaja says that it is a kind of double entendre riddle called shuku.
The Daimyo asks if one can learn to make these riddles. Taro Kaja says yes, and the Daimyo asks to be taught. Taro Kaja says that he is not good enough at it to teach, so the Daimyo sends him out to find someone who can teach shuku. Taro Kaja meets an Umbrella Maker on the road, and the Umbrella Maker says he can make any number of shuku about umbrellas. They return and the Daimyo is so pleased with his teacher that he gives him his sword, dagger, fan, and the clothes off his back. In return the Umbrella Maker gives the Daimyo his last umbrella, and goes off singing happily. In the Okura script, the Umbrella Maker leaves quietly as soon as he gives the Daimyo the umbrella. The Daimyo recites a poem about cold rain at night and an umbrella, then observes that shuku is a rather chilly pastime.

He at first refuses to give it back before she dances for fear that she will fly away as soon as the robe is hers again, but when the angel tells him that such behaviour is only to be found in the ways of men, he shamefacedly gives up the robe. Overjoyed now, the angel puts it on and dances. Then, calling down blessings without number on the land, she disappears up to Heaven among the mists and clouds.
