Kyogen"CHA TSUBO"(The Tea Box)
main performer:Sengoro Shigeyama
★story★
A Country Man is staggering drunkenly along with a box of tea on his back. He has just purchased his master's supply of tea for the year and got drunk in celebration of the deal on the tea dealer's saké. He decides to lie down by the road to sleep for a while, and loosens one of the shoulder straps on the tea box to be more comfortable. A Shyster happens along the same road and decides to cheat the Country Man out of his tea. He lies down and puts his own arm through the loose strap. He pretends to wake up at the same time as the Country Man and they quarrel over the ownership of the tea box. An Arbiter comes out to settle the dispute. The Shyster manipulates the questioning so that the Country Man always has to speak first. He eavesdrops and imitates every word and action of the Country Man when it comes his turn to be questioned.
Finally the Arbiter orders them to recite their answers in a song and dance which they must both do simultaneously. The Shyster, still imitating, is about three quarters of a beat behind through the whole recitation. The Arbiter still cannot make up his mind, and says that when no decision can be made, the goods go to the arbiter. He picks up the tea box and makes a run for it. The Shyster and the Country Man chase after him shouting that they have been cheated.
